Sophomore forward Raneem Elgedawy has been named to the NCAA Weekly Starting Five for the week, the organization announced Wednesday.
According to the NCAA, the “Starting Five honors a starting lineup of players from around the country who enjoyed standout performances for that week.”
Elgedawy is only the fourth Lady Topper in program history to earn a Starting Five nod.
Elgedawy joins Chastity Gooch (2014-15), Kendall Noble (2015-16) and Tashia Brown (2016-17) as the only WKU women’s basketball players to be named to the weekly list.
The honor comes on the heels of Elgedawy’s two strong performances during WKU’s road trip to Florida last week.
The Lady Toppers (11-8, 5-0 Conference USA) dominated Florida International (3-16, 0-6 C-USA) on Thursday and Florida Atlantic (3-16, 0-6 C-USA) on Saturday, maintaining an unblemished record in C-USA action.
Elgedawy averaged 26.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game during road wins over FIU and FAU. During the two-game stretch, Elgedawy accounted for 53 of the Lady Toppers’ 175 points, good for nearly a third of the team’s total scoring.
The sophomore from Alexandria, Egypt, scored a career-best 28 points in a 94-82 win over FIU, netting the first 3-pointer of her career and also snagging nine rebounds.
Elgedawy followed that performance by notching a team-high 25 points, 16 rebounds, five steals and two blocks in an 81-50 win over FAU.
Elgedawy not only notched her third double-double of the season against the Owls, but also became the first WKU post player with back-to-back 25-point games since Gooch in January 2014.
Elgedawy is currently the only player in C-USA who ranks in the top five in both scoring (19.8) and rebounding (8.6) per game in conference play.
Through 19 contests, Elgedawy is averaging 16.1 points and eight rebounds per game.
Elgedawy was also named C-USA Player of the Week earlier this week, joining more exclusive company in the annals of program history.
Brown and Elgedawy are the only Lady Toppers who have won both a Freshman of the Week and Player of the Week award since WKU joined C-USA in 2014-15.
WKU will be in action tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Diddle Arena against Southern Mississippi.
