Alyssa Cavanaugh recorded 123 wins as a member of the WKU volleyball team, but now she’s going after a much bigger win off the court.

The former Lady Topper star revealed via Twitter on Thursday that she has been diagnosed with Leukemia.

Cavanaugh was a member of WKU volleyball’s highly-touted 2017 senior class. She had success from day one, as she was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2014. She was also an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American Honorable Mention and a First-Team All-Conference member. She led the team with 411 kills that year.

Cavanaugh’s success continued. As a sophomore, she once again led the team in kills with 400. She also earned AVCA All-America Honorable Mention and All-Conference First Team honors for the second straight year.

As a junior, Cavanaugh led the conference with 516 kills. She was named the Conference USA Player of the Year, and earned All-American honors from the AVCA, VolleyballMag.com and PrepVolleyball.com.

Cavanaugh followed that up by winning C-USA’s Female Athlete of the Year award her senior year. She was the first player in program history to earn AVCA Third-Team All-American honors. She once again led C-USA in kills with 489.

“Alyssa Cavanaugh is one of the fiercest competitors I have ever seen in my life,” head coach Travis Hudson said in a statement Friday. “She became one of the best volleyball players in the country during her time here at WKU, but it did not come without times of struggle.

“And it was those very struggles, the grit and determination that she showed in the face of it, that propelled her to greatness. She has grown into a strong, mentally tough young woman and is more than capable of facing the challenges that lie ahead of her.

“The words that came out of my mouth more than any other during her time on The Hill were ‘I believe in you’ and when it comes to the fight she has in front of her, I would utter those same words to her. I will be right beside her every step of the way.

I believe in Alyssa Cavanaugh.”

Cavanugh received an outpouring of support following her announcement.
