WKU football offensive assistant Steve Spurrier Jr. is leaving the program and accepting an assistant position at Washington State University, the Herald confirmed with the program on Thursday.

Spurrier Jr. was WKU’s assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach under first-year head coach Mike Sanford for the 2017 season. Before that, he was an assistant at the University of Oklahoma.

Spurrier Jr. also previously served as an assistant for his father, the former University of South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier, and held other assistant positions at the collegiate and NFL levels.

WKU quarterback Mike White threw for 321.3 yards per game and 26 total touchdowns on a completion percentage of 65.7 percent with Spurrier Jr. as his quarterbacks coach in the 2017 season.

Spurrier Jr. will join head coach Mike Leach’s staff at WSU this season. The Cougars went 9-4 last season, finishing the year with a loss to Michigan State University in the Holiday Bowl.
