Herald Staff

The man involved in a fight Sept.17 on Center Street near campus has been taken out of a medically induced coma and is responsive, a close friend confirms.

Cory Johnson, 20, was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for serious injuries after he was involved in a fight between several people, according to the Bowling Green Police Department.

A close friend and co-worker Austin Wiard also confirmed today Johnson has woken up and is recovering. Johnson suffered a skull fracture and brain bleeding after the night of Sept. 17, according to an incident report released by police.

“He woke up today,” Wiard said. “From what I am hearing, he is doing better.”

However, Johnson is still in “critical condition,” according to a University of Kentucky Medical Center marketing and public relations representative.

Wiard started a GoFundMe campaign to help relieve Johnson’s family from some of the medical expenses.

The campaign has raised more than $10,000 in five days time; however, Wiard still hopes to reach the $50,000 goal that was originally set for the campaign.

There are no known suspects announced at this time, and the investigation is still open, according to representatives from the BGPD.
