What’s on your mind?

Andrew Henderson

Are these issues on which you’d like to see the Herald editorial board express our opinion?

Your first reaction may be somewhere along the lines of “No, absolutely not. Why would I ever want to hear what these people have to say?” First, let me say that you are not the first or last person to say that about us.

But hear me out. I want to offer you, the readers, an opportunity to pitch a topic on a local, national or global level on which you’d like to see us give our take.

And to be completely transparent, by doing this I’m tearing a page from The Washington Post because their editorial board recently did this as well which is where I got the idea.

Evidently it went pretty well for the Post; they received more than 1,000 submissions on a number of topics and narrowed those down to 10 topics. Those included policies to address rising homelessness and whether the United States should continue to use the electoral college system.

In the same vein, we’d like you hear what you all are thinking. What topic do you want to learn more about? It can be something on campus, in the state or around the world. Point being, we want to know what’s got your curiosity piqued in the hopes that it’ll pique our curiosity as well.

Here’s how it will work. Pitch your idea, and offer up a short explanation of your reasoning. You can send that to us at [email protected] or through a Google Form.

From there, we’ll go through some of the more interesting and promising suggestions and ask you all to vote on the ideas. Then we’ll begin the process of reporting and writing an editorial on the winning topic.

And if your topic isn’t picked, don’t worry. We still want to have your ideas so we can build up stories around issues that are important to you all.

Just some general rules of thumb: be as specific as possible about the issue, feel free to include supporting links and documents about the issue, avoid profanity and slurs.

We look forward to hearing from you all and the ideas you have to offer.
