The WKU football team received verbal commitments from wide receiver Khalil Newton and offensive tackle Woody Lankford over the weekend.

Both prospects are considered three-star recruits according to 247sports.com, and each had several offers from other Division I schools.

Lankford is a 6-foot-4-inch, 275-pound offensive lineman from Lexington Catholic High School in Kentucky. He is ranked as the 13th best recruit in the state and is also the fourth recruit from KY to commit to the Hilltoppers.

The Lexington, KY native also had scholarship offers from Ball State University, Bowling Green State University, Eastern Kentucky University, Miami (OH) University and the University of Toledo.

Lankford reportedly said to WBKO that he has gotten to know the coaching staff at WKU “pretty well” and that staying in Kentucky will “help a whole lot in the future.”

Newton is a 6-foot-2-inch, 175-pound wide receiver from Stone Mountain, GA. According to maxpreps.com, Newton helped to lead Stephenson High School to a 9-2 record last year in the 6-A playoff division in Georgia.

Newton had offers from the University of Kentucky, Miami (OH) University, North Carolina State, Toledo, Coastal Carolina University, Jacksonville State and Wake Forest University.

The wide receiver is also the second player from the state of Georgia to commit to the Hilltoppers as he joins running back Caleb Huntley from Locust Grove High School.

The two new verbal commitments give the WKU football team eight total players committed so far in their recruiting class of 2017.
