During Tuesday’s Student Government Association meeting, resolution authors John Winstead and Jay Todd Richey proposed Resolution 2-16-S, a resolution to outline the Tenth President of Western Kentucky University.

The resolution was approved by the senate with some debate.

“I am, as you all know, a representative on the presidential search committee and, by virtue of that, I represent all 20,000 students,” Richey said. “My job is to ask candidates for the tenth presidency at WKU specific questions that I think are best for the student body. Everything that is in this resolution I believe is what is best for the student body. I would ask these candidates questions based around these.”

During the debate, student speakers debated the wording in the ninth and thirteenth clauses from the resolution.

In the ninth clause, the phrase, “every opportunity in charting the future trajectory of WKU with a goal of creating a zero emissions campus,” was amended to, “every opportunity in charting the future trajectory of WKU with a goal to improve our AASHE (the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System) silver rating to gold and ultimately to platinum and to maintain our position as a leader in the university sustainability department.”

In the thirteenth clause pretaining to the 10th president’s view of Jonesville, the phrase, “offer solutions for how reparations can be made,” was removed from the clause completely with a majority vote from the senate.

Student and senate speakers debated if reparations was the correct term for the clause. It was then changed to the word restitution and ultimately omitted from the clause as a whole.

In the Campus Improvements Committee report, Zach Jones announced the annual Campus Safety Walk would be on April 22. The safety walk will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Centennial Mall.

In the Sustainability Committee report, Chelsea Faught said they will be hosting an Earth Day Festival on April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The senate voted on the Student Government Awards, which consist of the Dero Downing Award, the Outstanding Senator award, the Outstanding Committee Member Award and the Charles A. Keown Award. The winners will be announced at the SGA’s 50 Anniversary banquet.

Bill 14-16-S, Funding for Additional Study Abroad and Summer Term Scholarships, will be voted on during the next SGA meeting.
