A truck driven by a WKU student caught fire on campus Wednesday morning. The student sustained no injuries.

Midway sophomore Newell Hicks was in the truck as he was exiting Virginia Garrett Loop. He parked the vehicle, heard a pop and saw smoke coming from the engine. Hicks walked out of the car, and the truck caught on fire soon after. He called 911 and the Bowling Green Fire Department responded.

The fire occurred around 10 a.m. and was put out around 10:30 a.m.

The incident temporarily shut down a stretch of Normal Drive while BGFD extinguished the fire.

Hicks said he was on his way to Greenwood Mall. He didn’t drive the truck for two weeks while he was on a training trip with the WKU Swim Team.

The truck is a 2002 silver Dodge Ram 1500. After the fire was put out, the truck was towed away. The entire front portion of the car, including the interior, was significantly burned.
