HALFTIME: WKU 27, UAB 14

Anthony Wales has three touchdowns on 107 yards rushing and WKU holds a 27-14 lead at halftime.

Quarterback Brandon Doughty is 17-for-19 for 234 yards and a TD.

WKU has a 370-210 advantage on offense over UAB, who opened the game with a 99-yard opening kick return for a touchdown from J.J. Nelson to take the early lead.

Brandon Doughty and the Hilltopper offense responded with a touchdown drive of their own where Doughty completed six passes including a 15-yard strike to Taywan Taylor for the score.

Rico Brown recovered a D.J. Vinson fumble on UAB’s ensuing drive to give WKU the ball back at its own 38 yard line.

WKU made quick work of the Blazers’ turnover when Doughty’s 30 yard pass to Nicholas Norris set up a two-yard score from redshirt sophomore Anthony Wales to give the Hilltoppers a 14-7 lead with 6:50 left in the first quarter.

UAB answered right back with a four minute drive capped by a Cody Clements 24-yard touchdown pass to Kennard Backman to tie the score at 14-all with 2:40 left in the first quarter.

Wales scored his second touchdown of the night with a 75-yard score on WKU’s first play of the following drive. Garrett Schwettman’s PAT was blocked as WKU held a 20-14 lead with 2:29 left in the first quarter.

Schwettman’s kicking game didn’t find success WKU’s next drive. The kicker missed a 27-yard field goal wide right to give the Blazers’ offense another shot with 10:16 remaining in the first half.

Wales found the end zone once again with a 22-yard score with 6:30 left in the first half to put WKU up 27-14.

UAB’s Ty Long missed a 48-yard field goal wide left to give WKU a 27-14 lead at halftime.
