Lady Toppers take down Belmont 5-1

Austin Lanter

The WKU Lady Topper Softball team got back to its winning ways Wednesday with a 5-1 win over the Belmont Bruins.

The win came a few days after No. 21 Louisiana-Lafayette swept the team in a Sun Belt Conference series.

With the win, WKU is now 25-13-1 on the season.

The Lady Toppers wasted no time getting ahead of their opponents Wednesday as they scored two runs in the first inning.

The team later added two runs in the third and another in the sixth inning.

Belmont (11-23) got one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning, but that was all that WKU would allow them.

The team outhit its opponent 12-2 en route to the victory.

Senior pitcher Emily Rousseau bounced back after a rough weekend by pitching a complete game and only allowing the two hits and one run. She also only walked one batter and struck out two.

With the win, Rousseau is now 14-9 on the season.

Senior infielder Olivia Watkins had a good day at the plate for the Lady Toppers going three for three.

Junior infielder Shawna Sadler and freshman infielder Andie Martin had a pair of RBI’s each for the team while senior outfielder Kelsia Mattox drove in one.

WKU will be back in action Thursday at home against Mississippi Valley State (7-30) at 4 p.m.
