The Lady Topper Softball team was able to rally from a run down in the final inning against Middle Tennessee Wednesday to send the game to extras and ultimately win 4-2.

WKU is now 29-14-1 overall on the season.

The teams played to a stalemate and were tied at zero until the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, senior outfielder Kelsie Mattox was walked and the first run of the day was scored for WKU.

The Blue Raiders responded in the sixth inning, however, with a two-run home run off of freshman pitcher Hannah Miniard.

Headed into the final inning, WKU was down to its last chance down 2-1. With a runner on third base and one out, junior infielder Preslie Cruce reached on a fielder’s choice and sophomore infielder Brooke Holloway scored to tie the game.

Junior pitcher Janna Scheff took care of business on the mound for WKU in the bottom of the seventh sending the game into extra innings.

The Lady Toppers were able to plate two runs in the eighth inning and hold on to take the game by a score of 4-2.

Cruce ended the day with two RBI’s while Mattox had one, as did senior infielder Olivia Watkins.

WKU scored its four runs on seven hits while MTSU recorded eight hits but only two runs. Errors were also key on Wednesday. The Lady Toppers committed one while their opponents had three in the game.

Next up for WKU is Texas State (21-24, 4-8 SBC) in a three game series this weekend. Two games will be played Friday with the first one starting at 4 p.m. The series will conclude Saturday with a game at noon.
