Govan, Lady Toppers trounce SEMO

The Lady Topper basketball team traveled to Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Tuesday and left with a 90-75 victory over Southeast Missouri State behind a strong effort from junior guard Alexis Govan.

The All-American candidate led the Lady Toppers with 21 points, 17 of which came in the first half alone. She also recorded five rebounds, four assists and five steals. Junior forward Chastity Gooch posted 18 points and eight rebounds while seven different Lady Toppers scored at least seven points.

WKU (3-1) held a commanding 43-27 lead over SEMO at halftime. Govan tallied 13 of her 17 points in just over seven of the final minutes in the first half. The Lady Toppers shot a combined 58 percent at the break.

SEMO cut the Lady Topper lead to single digits in the second half, but ultimately couldn’t pull away from WKU, which finished shooting an impressive 63 percent from the field. The 90-75 win marks the second time a Lady Topper team scored at least 90 points under coach Michelle Clark-Heard.

The Lady Toppers will be back in action Saturday on the road against Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m.
