The 2013-14 season got off to a good start for the WKU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams Saturday as the Topper squads came home with wins over Delta State.

It was the first meet of the season for the teams — the Topper men beat Delta State 182.5-107.5 while the Lady Toppers won 195-90.

WKU swimmers won 23 of 28 individual events and all four relays at Delta State.

The meet was the first competitive event for WKU’s 22 new swimmers and the newcomers played an important role in the win. Ten of WKU’s wins came from new Topper swimmers, and WKU is fielding a freshman class of 20 athletes.

Seven WKU swimmers won two or more matches. Freshman Cody Reul brought home three individual wins from the meet, coming in first place in 100, 500, and 1,000 free events.

With the season opener behind them, the WKU swimmers will now turn their attention to their next meet, at Northwestern on Oct. 25.
