The WKU baseball team scored a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth inning to come from behind and defeat VMI 4-3 on Saturday.

Junior pitcher Andrew Edwards took the mound for WKU (6-7) Saturday and allowed a leadoff single. Edwards gave up three hits total in the first inning and one run to give VMI a 1-0 lead.

Senior infielder Scott Wilcox recorded a base hit in the bottom half of the inning, but the next two batters were retired by the Keydets.

After giving up three hits in the first inning, Edwards retired seven batters in a row before allowing a single to leadoff the fourth inning. Sophomore catcher Ryan Messex would later pick the runner off stealing second and Edwards would retire the next two batters to end the inning.

VMI would increase its lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning and would then tack on another in the sixth for a 3-0 lead.

Overall, Edwards pitched six innings for WKU, allowing six hits, three runs, and striking out five.

The WKU offense came alive in the bottom of the seventh inning. At the time, the team was trailing 3-0. In the seventh, WKU record two hits, including a two-run single courtesy of freshman infielder Thomas Peter.

The Toppers would end up leaving the tying run on base in the inning and head to the eighth inning trailing by one.

The bullpen did its job once again – Sophomores Tate Glasscock and Ian Tompkins pitched three innings combined for WKU and allowed no hits and no runs.

The pitching staff as a whole combined to throw 11 strikeouts on the day.

WKU would take the lead in the eighth inning and shut the Keydets out in the ninth to win 4-3.

Senior infielder Ryan Huck started the Toppers off with an one out single. The next batter, freshman outfielder Anderson Miller, connected on a triple that brought the run around to tie the game at three.

Messex followed up the triple with a double of his own to bring Miller in. The RBI for Messex would prove to be the difference in the game.

The one-run game is the sixth of the season for WKU in its first 13 games.

WKU will go for its first series sweep on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Nick Denes Field and look to improve to .500 on the season.
