Offensive line coach Mike Summers has left the WKU coaching staff before the Toppers could even kick off spring practice.

Summers has been hired by USC to take over as offensive line coach, CBS Sports reported Tuesday night.

He is the second assistant coach hired to work under new coach Bobby Petrino that has left before the 2013-14 season could begin. Former defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator Kevin Peoples resigned on Jan. 12 to take over as defensive line coach at UAB.

Summers had spent the previous three seasons at Kentucky, serving as offensive line coach and running game coordinator for the Wildcats. He will join USC coach Lane Kiffinโ€™s Trojan squad that finished 7-6 last season.

WKU will likely look to fill the hole in the coaching staff quickly with spring practice scheduled to begin in March. The Toppers play their first regular season game Aug. 31 against Kentucky.
