The Lady Toppers improved to 3-2 on the season Friday night with a 3-0 win over Valparaiso at the WKU softball complex.

Due to inclement weather, WKU’s scheduled matchup with South Dakota State was canceled, and games were moved from Buchanon Park to the WKU softball complex.

Junior pitcher Emily Rousseau came out strong on the mound for the Lady Toppers, totaling five strikeouts in the first three innings. Rousseau finished the game with 11 strikeouts overall.

WKU’s first score came off a walk while the bases were loaded in the second inning, bringing in freshman Bethany Oglesby.

The Lady Toppers put another on the board in the third inning as junior outfielder Kelsie Mattox drove a pitch to right center, allowing junior infielder Olivia Watkins to score.

In the bottom of the fourth, senior outfielder Katrina Metoyer gave the Lady Toppers a 3-0 advantage by smashing the first homerun for WKU this season over the center wall.

Rousseau gave up the only hit of the game from Valparaiso in the top of the fifth inning.

The Lady Toppers will go on to face Dayton tomorrow at 1 p.m. and Western Michigan at 3:30 at Buchanon Park.
