President of Project Amazonas, a non-profit which “serves the people of the Amazon and [works to] conserve the rainforest,” and PhD. professor at Florida International University, Devon Graham, measures “Lucy,” the first female of a previously undocumented species of tree, a tropical conifer, Retrophyllum, with Nathan Phelps. “Lucy” has not officially been categorized as a new species because Graham’s partner, botanist Rodolfo Vasquez, has been unable to fully describe the tree as is required in a scientific paper to be peer reviewed.
