WKU has continued its perfect start to the Sun Belt Conference season.

The Lady Toppers (5-1, 3-0 Sun Belt) earned their third win in conference play Saturday, beating Troy 84-81 at Trojan Arena in Troy, Ala.

The team was led by sophomore guard Alexis Govan, who poured in 32 points and put the team on her back in the last minutes.

With less that 30 seconds left and WKU down one, coach Michelle Clark-Heard drew up a play for sophomore Chastity Gooch in the post.

The ball swung across the perimeter and an entry pass was made to Gooch on the right block.

Gooch, who dominated the paint with a 25-point, 16-rebound performance, commanded the attention of the Troy defenders who sunk on her to stop her from making a post move.

Gooch then quickly skipped the ball out to Govan who sat wide open on the left wing.

Govan hit the shot to give the Lady Tops an 82-80 lead. Troy came down and hit a free throw.

Junior guard Chaney Means was fouled and sent to the line. Just Thursday she went 6 for 6 from the charity stripe down the stretch and helped WKU defeat Louisiana-Monroe.

This time she hit the front end on her one-and-one attempt and Troy took the ball all the way down court. The ball was knocked out off of WKU and Troy had the ball under its own basket with 5.5 seconds left.

Govan jumped the out-of-bounds pass to gather in her sixth steal of the game and was fouled in the process.

She sank both free throws, giving WKU the 84-81 lead and sealing WKU’s third Sun Belt victory.

The win was the Lady Toppers’ seventh consecutive win against Troy, marking the longest active winning streak for WKU against a Sun Belt opponent.

WKU has started 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2007-08, when it won its first 11 matchups in league play en route to a 16-2 conference record and East Division championship.

The Lady Toppers will return to Bowling Green this Tuesday when they host Vanderbilt at Diddle Arena.
