WKU blanks South Alabama 2-0

WKU plays Southern Alabama on Friday, Oct. 12 at the Western Kentucky Soccer Complex. The Lady Toppers won the game 2-0, with both goals scored in the first half by Sydney Sisler and Amanda Buechel. Lady Topper Senior is grabbed by a Southern Alabama player while breaking away with the ball.

WKU (10-4-1, 5-1-1 Sun Belt Conference) scored two early goals and shut out its fourth straight conference opponent at home on Friday, defeating South Alabama 2-0 at the WKU Soccer Complex.

Junior Sydney Sisler scored just 33 seconds into the game, the quickest goal by a Lady Topper this season, to give WKU an early 1-0 lead.

It was the second consecutive game that Sisler had scored in after failing to find the back of the net in the first 13 games of the season.

In the 25th minute, senior Amanda Buechel found the back of the net for the ninth time this season after Kelsey Burnette crossed a ball to the short side that Buechel slipped into a gap between South Alabama keeper Melissa Drish and the left post.

It marked the 25th goal for Buechel in her career, moving her into a tie for fourth place on the school’s all-time goals list with Kristin Cocchiarella (2005-08).

She needs two goals to tie Allison Nellis (2001-04) for third on the all-time list.

The two points scored via the goal also put her into third place on the WKU all-time points list with 69 career points.

She passed Kellie Walker (2006-09) with the goal. She needs two points to tie Jenna Silverberg (2003-06) for second place on the all-time list.

WKU is just the second team in South Alabama’s (7-7-2, 2-3-1) last 11 opponents to score multiple goals on the Jaguars. WKU scored twice on a South Alabama team that entered the weekend tied for the league lead in shutouts with seven.

WKU returns to the field at 1 p.m. on Sunday when the Lady Toppers host Troy at the WKU Soccer Complex.
