Lady Toppers secure weekend Sun Belt sweep
September 23, 2012
WKU capped off their weekend with its second conference win in as many nights on Saturday.
The Lady Toppers beat the South Alabama Jaguars 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-12) before 481 fans at Diddle Arena.
The first set wasn’t an easy one for the Lady Toppers.
South Alabama came out fiery and took a quick 10-7 lead.
At that point senior Sarah Rogers took the serve, regained composure and jump-started the WKU offense.
Coach Travis Hudson was glad to get the win in three sets but was disappointed in how the first set went.
“I thought we were kind of flat in game one and we have got to guard against that,” he said.
The Lady Toppers (16-3, 2-0 Sun Belt) will be favored against every single opponent they face in conference play this year.
Hudson said he wants the team to focus on playing against itself.
“We’ve got to compete against us and push ourselves to be better than we can and in game one we didn’t do that,” Hudson said.
Lady Topper sophomore Heather Boyan had a breakout game.
Boyan put up an amazing 16 kills on 23 attempts in just three sets. She also chipped in with a block and 5 digs.
Hudson praised Boyan’s preparation.
“Heather’s one kid that you absolutely know is going to be ready to play,” he said. “She’s every coach’s dream in terms of preparation.”
Boyan will put this game behind her and continue to prepare for the Lady Toppers’ four game road trip that starts Friday at Louisiana-Lafayette.
The team’s grueling non-conference schedule is going to help during this conference road trip, she said.
“It’s always tough going on the road.” Boyan said “But we’ll have a few days of practice so we’re excited to work on the things we need to work on.”
Hudson said the four-game road stretch will be the toughest of the conference season but said the team’s non-conference schedule was great preparation for what the Lady Toppers will face.
“We really pushed ourselves and got out and played in some tough environments and hopefully that will serve us well in the coming weeks,” he said.
