Former WKU swimmer Claire Donahue won a gold medal on Saturday as part of team USA’s 4×100 medley relay.

Donahue wasn’t one of the swimmers in the pool when the US captured the gold, but she played an important role in getting the team to the medal round.

Donahue swam in the butterfly leg of the preliminary heat and clocked in with a time of 58.05 seconds.

That time helped qualify her team in fourth and earned them a spot in the medal round. In addition to her gold medal, Donahue set a personal best with her performance in the 100 meter butterfly and was able to qualify for the finals in that event.

WKU swimming coach Bruce Marchionda said of Donahue’s Olympic performance, “She had a great experience at this year’s Games and has represented our program and this university exceptionally well. Claire performed on the biggest stage and has made us all very proud.”
