Track and field competitors set several new records Saturday at the Hilltopper Invitational.

The Charles M. Ruter Track and Field Complex welcomed Bellarmine, Eastern Illinois, Central Michigan, Marshall, Murray State, Tiffin, Kentucky State, Campbellsville, SEMO, SIU-Edwardsville, and several unattached competitors during WKU’s only home outdoor meet for the season.

Junior jumper Jade Nimmo broke the school record in the long jump as she led the Lady Topper team with a marking of 21-2.75 — five inches better than Antquinta Reed’s school record in the 2010-2011 season.

Nimmo, a Scotland native, said weather conditions during the meet helped her jump further.

“Conditions were perfect for the long jump,” Nimmo said. “It was windy so I got the feeling of jumping far and when you don’t have the wind you just remember what it felt like when the wind pushed you.”

Nimmo also expressed her mindset before having to jump in competition.

“I usually try to think about the things we go over in practice and when it comes time I just run fast and get in the ready position and execute,” Nimmo said.

In throwing for field events, senior Monteka Flowers earned top honors as she was the top-collegiate finisher in shot put as well as the hammer. In shot, Flowers threw a season best mark of 48-4.75 and in hammer a marking of 179-8.

On the track, Irma Maciukaite competed in the womens 400-meter intermediate hurdles where she won and clocked a time 1:00.77. She’s now ranked second on the Lady Topper all-time list in the event.

WKU’s men’s team also set new records.

Senior javelin thrower Ignacio Guerra won in his first competiton of the year, recording three marks over 70 meters.

Guerra has the possibility to be an Olympic qualifier in the event and his performance impressed WKU President Gary Ransdell, who was in attendance.

“WKU’s very own Ignacio looks like he’s gonna be an olympic qualifier in the javelin,” Ransdell said. “He threw 71 meters which is an incredible throw, so today was great fun.”
