Louisville assistant Michelle Clark-Heard was named WKU head coach on Thursday, the university announced.

A former Lady Topper player from 1987-1990, Clark-Heard is the 15th head coach in program history.

She replaces Mary Taylor Cowles, who was fired on March 8 after a 9-21 season, the school’s first ever 20-loss season.

A formal press conference to introduce Clark-Heard will be held at 4 p.m. in the Diddle Arena media room.

During her five years as a Louisville assistant the Cardinals made three Sweet 16 appearances and finished as national runner-ups in 2009.

Prior to her time at Louisville, Clark-Heard was head coach at Kentucky State, where she won Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2007.

She also served stints as an assistant at Nebraska (where she coached under former WKU head coach Paul Sanderford) and Cincinnati.
