Tampa, Fla., (Plant High School) wide receiver Austin Aikens made his verbal commitment to WKU public Monday night after visiting last weekend.

Aikens, a Rivals.com three-star recruit who’s listed at 6-feet and 185 pounds, had been a top target for WKU coaches this off-season.

“They rolled out the red carpet,” said Teryl Aikens, Austin’s father, in an interview with TampaBayOnline.com. “They let Austin know right away that he wasn’t their No. 1 recruit at wide receiver, but that he was their No. 1 recruit period.”

Aikens also had offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Iowa, Missouri and Vanderbilt, among others.

The addition of Aikens brings the total to 13 verbal commitments for WKU from the Class of 2012 going into Wednesday’s National Signing Day.

Aikens is currently the lone Class of 2012 receiver to accept a scholarship offer to WKU, however two Class of 2011 wide receivers, Michael Fluellen of Lousiville Seneca High School and Jerrell Moore of Louisville Fern Creek High School, enrolled at WKU this semester.
