WAC commish Benson to reportedly take same job with Sun Belt

The Sun Belt Conference may have found its replacement for retiring commissioner Wright Waters.

Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson will reportedly be named Sun Belt commissioner, according to a CBSSports.com report published on Tuesday.

Benson, 60, has been WAC commissioner since 1994.

The CBSSports report comes one day after the Mountain West Conference and Conference-USA announced their intentions to merge and form a 16-team league, which would also draw teams from the WAC.

John McElwain, Sun Belt Associate Commissioner, told the Herald on Tuesday that the league had no comment on the report.

WKU Senior Associate AD Todd Stewart told the Herald he was “not aware a decision has been made.”

“The decision will be made by the presidents of the respective Sun Belt universities, and it will be announced by the conference office at the appropriate time,” Stewart said.

Waters, who has been league commissioner since December of 1998, announced last October he’d retire effective July 1, 2012.
