The Student Government Association is making its twice-annual effort to keep WKU’s campus clean.

Campus Improvements Chairperson Keyana Boka is organizing the Campus Clean-up, which will take place this Tuesday from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Service credit will be available.

“We’ll be picking up trash and recycling that’s littered around campus,” Boka said.

The event isn’t limited to SGA members.

As of now, 17 senators have volunteered to help. Boka also emailed student athletes, and a fraternity pledge class will be there too.

Boka said the group will meet at Centennial Mall near the red statue. Gloves donated by the biology department and trash bags will be provided.

“We’ll be starting at Centennial Mall then work our way up the Hill and around campus,” Boka said. “Up to Cherry Hall, then back down to DUC.”

The SGA’ Campus Clean-up is organized twice a year — once in the fall and once in the spring. Boka said that in the fall, it’s usually during Make A Difference Week as it is this year. She said SGA hopes to have its clean-up during Greek Week in the spring.

SGA Director of Academic and Student Affairs Travis Taylor said he feels the event is very worthwhile. He said it’s a great way to raise awareness of the importance of picking up trash and helping make the campus a better place.

Taylor has helped out previously with the event.

“I also feel like it’s a very important event because it helps to emphasize the beauty of WKU’s campus,” Taylor said. “The beauty of WKU’s campus is what draws some students here.”

Poorvie Patel, a senator on the Campus Improvements Committee, said Campus Clean-up has been a tradition for decades.

Patel was on the committee last year and is again this year.

“It not only brings environmental awareness, but it also gets the name out on behalf of SGA to show how we try to truly improve campus,” said Patel.

Patel said SGA is making an effort for the entire school to get involved, saying, “Let’s see Toppers take trash outta here!”
