WKU announced on Thursday that it has agreed to a home-and-home series with Southern Mississippi in both football and men’s basketball.

According to a press release from WKU Athletic Media Relations, the series will start on September 22, 2012, when Conference USA’s Southern Mississippi travels to Smith Stadium to play the Toppers.

The two teams have never met in football.

WKU now has six home games slated for the 2011 and 2012 football seasons. The Toppers played five home games in 2010.

The second game of the series won’t be played until the 2016 season when WKU travels to Southern Mississippi.

The men’s basketball series will also begin during the 2012-2013, with WKU traveling first to Southern Mississippi. They’ll return to Diddle Arena during the 2013-2014 season to close out the series.

WKU has won all three meetings between the two schools in basketball. The teams last played each other in 2001 and 2002.
