The Lady Toppers fell one hit short of another late-inning comeback Wednesday in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, following Saturday’s walk-off eighth-inning celebration to clinch the No. 7 seed.
WKU (29-28, 9-16 Sun Belt Conference) lost to second-seeded FAU, 4-3, today in the first round of the double-elimination Sun Belt tournament in Lafayette, La.
The Lady Toppers will face an elimination game against sixth-seeded Louisiana-Monroe Thursday at 10 a.m.
FAU scored three runs in the third and one run in fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
But WKU mounted a comeback in the fifth inning when freshman shortstop Amanda Thomas delivered a three-run single to cut FAU’s lead to 4-3. Two runners scored on the hit and a third scored after a throwing error.
The two-RBI single from Thomas marked her 30th RBI for the Lady Toppers this season — second to freshman second baseman Kelsie Mattox with 34.
The Lady Toppers had a chance to tie it in the seventh inning with runners on first and second and sophomore catcher Karavin Dew — who was named a First Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection this week — at the plate.
But Dew struck out, and Thomas followed by flying out to end WKU’s chance at victory.
Head Coach Tyra Perry was not available for comment after the game.
