The Toppers will be another guard down next season.

Although WKU hasn’t acknowledged the news, an April 19 release from Erskine College announced that freshman walk-on guard Mike Gabbard will transfer from WKU to the Division-II school in Due West, S.C.

Gabbard confirmed his departure with the Herald Wednesday night and said he will be on full scholarship at Erskine. He declined to comment further, citing personal reasons for the move.

“We are extremely excited about Mike being in an Erskine uniform next season,” Erskine coach Mark Peeler said in the school’s release. “He is a quality guard who not only will make an immediate impact for us but has the potential to be one of the top guards in Conference Carolinas.”

The news of Gabbard’s transfer comes on the same night that IMG Academy (Fla.) guard Spence Sheldon told the Herald he will walk on at WKU next season.

Gabbard played in 12 games as a freshman at WKU, serving as the only true backup point guard to sophomore Jamal Crook.

He played in four Sun Belt Conference games after returning from a high ankle sprain that sidelined him for several weeks.
