One run in each game separated the Lady Toppers from grabbing two Sun Belt Conference wins on Saturday as they played a doubleheader at Troy.

WKU (21-19, 3-8 Sun Belt) fell 1-0 in the first game and lost 7-6 in the second.

Head Coach Tyra Perry said the Lady Toppers’ had a problem Saturday that was the opposite of the slow starts that have plagued them so far this season.

“We didn’t play seven innings,” she said. “We’ve been working on trying to start stronger. We did that, but we didn’t play the full game. We had our opportunities in both games but didn’t get it done.”

The first game went scoreless through the first five innings until the Trojans reached the board in the bottom of the sixth inning on an error.

The Lady Toppers failed to respond in the seventh inning and managed just two hits in the game.

The Lady Toppers had plenty of offensive firepower in the second game, out-hitting the Trojans, 13-12, and tallying four home runs.

But a four-run sixth inning from Troy put the Trojans ahead 6-4 and proved too much to handle for WKU in the seventh inning despite a solo home run from freshman Amanda Thomas.

Sophomore Kim Wagner (10-9) took both losses for WKU, yielding no earned runs on four hits in six innings of work in the first game and two runs on just one hit in a third of an inning pitched in the second game.

Perry said both games lacked a defining moment for the Lady Toppers.

“As a team we need to finish innings and need people to step up in defining moments and crucial situations,” she said. “We just have to keep putting pressure on the other team.”

Perry also said that problem would continue until someone on the team can deliver in the clutch.

The Lady Toppers finish the road series at 1 p.m. Sunday.

“It’ll be a problem as long as we let it,” she said. “Almost all of our losses have been in our hands. We just have to get tired of losing.”
