The Lady Toppers had one last game at Tennessee State before they begin Sun Belt Conference play this weekend.

WKU (15-8) defeated Tennessee State, 13-4, in six innings on Wednesday.

Head Coach Tyra Perry said the team executed plays under pressure.

“The team did a good job today of getting hits in a row when it counted,” she said. “We executed a few runs, and we had a couple of good bunts that went down that will be important in conference play.”

The Lady Toppers reached the board first, scoring three runs on a two-run Tennessee State throwing error and an RBI fielder’s choice by sophomore Ciara Garcia in the second inning.

WKU had an explosion of offense in the fourth inning, plating eight runs on six hits in the top of the frame.

Tennessee State would mount a small resistance in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, scoring four unanswered runs, to hold the score at 11-4 entering the sixth.

The Lady Toppers closed the door in the sixth inning as they capitalized on two Tennessee State throwing errors and scored two runs.

The game ended by mercy rule after WKU shut out Tennessee State in the bottom of the sixth.

The Lady Toppers face South Alabama this weekend in Mobile, Ala., with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. and a third game at noon on Sunday.
