WKU volleyball wins two, completes sweep on final day at Xavier
September 5, 2010
The WKU volleyball team pulled out the brooms on Saturday at the Xavier Invitational.
The Lady Toppers (5-2) led the day off with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-22) win over IPFW, then finished off three wins in two days thanks to a 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-12, 25-21) victory over host Xavier.
Junior Tiffany Elmore posted 10 kills on the Musketeers, a .389 hitting percentage and six blocks. Sophomore Jordyn Skinner added nine kills, and junior Lindsay Williams contributed eight.
Outside of that, Head Coach Travis Hudson wasn’t bragging on his offense.
“And again, offensively especially, we really struggled,” Hudson said. “But our kids played with a lot of guts, and we found a way to get the win.”
A weekend sweep took WKU from .500 to three games above even.
Elmore was also the star for the Lady Toppers giants IPFW. She led WKU with a season-high 14 kills, which translated to a .600 hitting percentage.
Elmore, as a result, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
“Tiff made plays in a lot of ways,” Hudson said. “She was really, really good offensively, but she was a dominant force blocking as well. She’s ready to have that kind of year for us, I think.”
The Lady Toppers host their first matches of the season in Diddle Arena next weekend in the WKU Tournament, a two-day event that features Virginia Tech, Missouri, Tennessee Tech and Central Arkansas.
