Western’s women’s soccer team opened its regular season Friday night with a 3-0 loss at Tennessee.

The Lady Toppers hadn’t lost a season opener since 2006.

Tennessee first found the net after just three minutes of play when Tori Bailey connected with Chelsea Hatcher for a goal. The Lady Vols outshot Western 23-2 in the match and had as many goals as Western had shots by the 21st minute of action.

Anna Fisher and Caroline Brown also scored goals for Tennessee.

The defeat was only the third time in three years that the Lady Tops have allowed more than two goals in a single match.

Western will face another Southeastern Conference opponent on the road next Friday when it travels to Ole Miss. The Lady Tops play their first home match against Minnesota on Aug. 29.
