GOLF: Men and women show opposite results

Western’s men’s and women’s golf teams had opposite showings this weekend, with the women coming out on top and the men battling the weather to finish 10th in Lexington.

On Thursday, the Lady Toppers rolled over Tennessee State in their dual match showing. Western’s split teams both triumphed over the Lady Tigers, who were playing in their first competitive match since last spring.

Western’s Red squad finished first with a 338 score, while the Toppers squad finished with a 343 mark. Junior Leslie Adams shot an 81 to lead the Red team, while Jena Kissinger led the Topper squad with an 82.

“I played OK but there were some downshots that hurt my game,” Adams said. “My short game really helped me save par though.”

On the men’s side, the Toppers had to deal with bad weather as they finished 10th of 12 in the Johnny Owens Invitational in Lexington. Western finished with an overall mark of 934 after shooting 302 in the final round, their best round performance.

“The conditions were the worst I think I’ve ever played in,” freshman Brent Long said. “We just didn’t play up to our standards though.”

Western was led by senior Brandon Weaver who finished with a score of 229 to place 24th in the overall standings.

“Brandon’s really come on strong this year,” coach Brian Tirpak said. “He does a great job on the tee and hitting the fairways and has made himself into an all-conference candidate.”

Eastern Kentucky won the event with a team score of 871. The Colonels’ Brandon Brown took individual honors with a six-under 210.

The Lady Toppers will have to wait until April 19 before they tee off again, in the Sun Belt Conference Championships. Western’s men, however, will get some tee time in before the championships when they participate in the Cowboy Classic next Monday and Tuesday in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“The team has shown some improvement, but we just have a very young team,” Tirpak said. “We’re not really working on our weaknesses that well right now.”
