Elzy leaves program

A week before the women’s basketball team hopes to sign a new class of freshmen, it lost a key assistant coach.

Kyra Elzy accepted an assistant coaching job at Kansas on Wednesday after two seasons at Western. Elzy will work under Bonnie Hendrickson.

Coach Mary Taylor Cowles has yet to announce a replacement.

Lady Tops honored

The Lady Toppers held their annual banquet last night and handed out this year’s team awards.

Tiffany Porter Talbert won Most Valuable Player, Carla Bartee won newcomer of the year, Elisha Ford won the coaches award and shared defensive player of the year with Porter-Talbert, Cacie Pope won the Harry Burns Courage Award and Krystal Gardner won the Academic Excellence Award.
