Men on display in pageant

A traditional beauty pageant usually consists of several formally dressed women posing and smiling on a stage in hopes of being crowned the winner for the evening.

Not this time.

Alpha Delta Pi sorority will break those traditional rules at 7 p.m. tomorrow in Van Meter Auditorium by letting Western’s finest gentlemen compete for the chance to be crowned Mr. Hilltopper.

ADPi treasurer Katie Hurley, a sophomore from Evansville, Ind., said the pageant is open to any campus organization who wants to sponsor a guy.

The cost for one participant is $75, two participants cost $100 and three cost $125. All proceeds raised for the pageant are going toward the Ronald McDonald House.

“We raised over $3,000 last year, but our goal for this year is $5,000,” said Nashville sophomore Megan Jones, also an ADPi member.

This year’s competition will also come with a twist.

Instead of having a talent show this year, a “Dress for Your Dream Vacation” category has been added that allows the contestants to wear beach attire.

“There was nothing wrong with the talent show,” Hurley said. “We were trying to make it more of a pageant instead of a talent show.”

Jones said there are no restrictions to what the contestants can wear as long as there is no nudity.

The other two categories consist of a Hilltopper spirit competition that requires contestants to display their best Western spirit, and a formalwear competition in which the contestants try to dress to impress and have the opportunity to answer a question.

Judges for the pageant this year are ADPi alumnae.

The contestant who wins will receive a plaque and be named Mr. Hilltopper. The two runners-up will also receive plaques.

Jones said there will be about 10 contestants this year.

Tickets for the Mr. Hilltopper pageant are $4, and gift certificates to Bowling Green businesses will be given away as door prizes.

“I would like to encourage people to come out to see the pageant because it’s for a good cause,” Hurley said. “It’s also a good chance to see guys in a rare form.”
