Police tie for third

Campus police tied for third in the Seventh Annual Chief’s Challenge, a national contest for police departments at state, city and university levels.

The contest targets three traffic issues – occupant protection, impaired driving and speeding.

Campus police officer Joe Harbaugh was in charge of putting Western’s application together. He compiled the statistics that patrol officers collected on the job.

It was an “analysis of the department in the three areas” of the contest, Harbaugh said.

Campus police tied with the University of Virginia police department.

“I think it’s a pretty good honor considering the division we’re in,” Harbaugh said.

The University of Virginia’s department is nearly double the size of Western’s.

Virginia Tech and Southern Illinois beat out Western for the top two spots.
