You’ve Got Mail

“You’ve Got Mail,” starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, is considered one of the best simple love stories that will charm the hearts of all who watch it. Hanks plays the part of Joe Fox, an uptight, corporate heir who begins to have an online romance with Kathleen Kelly, played by Meg Ryan. Their romance begins to blossom; however, as their professional career paths cross, they are each other’s worst nightmare. Their conflicting lives set up a warm-hearted storyline enjoyed by all.

The witty banter exchanged by Hanks and Ryan is enough to add a quirky comedic performance to an unforgettable, sweet love story.

Romeo and Juliet

The timeless classic, “Romeo and Juliet”, is about a pair of star-crossed lovers who are torn apart by their feuding families, the Montagues and Capulets. Romeo, played by the hunky Leonardo DiCaprio, and Juliet, played by the beautiful Claire Danes, have great chemistry in the updated version of the Shakespearean tale.

Both display great chemistry in scenes with each other and worthy dramatic performances as each cause their own death because of their love for one another.

The movie takes an old, familiar story and adds glam to it by setting in it Verona Beach, casting hot actors, portraying the Montagues and the Capulets more as feuding gangs as opposed to families, and fights with guns instead of swords.

Gone With the Wind

For the older audiences, another classic is in order. The unforgettable “Gone With the Wind” tells the tale of the romantic and heated love affair between Scarlett O’Hara, played by Vivien Leigh, and Rhett Butler, played by Clark Gable. Although O’Hara becomes entangled with Butler, she secretly is in love with the charming Ashley Wilkes. This creates a love triangle between the three. Wilkes does not return her love and it becomes her mission to win him back by marrying others to spite him. Although the love affair takes backseat to the breathtaking backdrops and the historical Civil War conflict, it is nonetheless a large and important part of the movie. The movie is ultimately about the willpower and determination of O’Hara and the romantic love story serves as fuel to her fire. She always wants what she can’t have and will stop at nothing for that.

Shrek

If you are looking for more of a romantic family movie this Valentine’s Day, then check out “Shrek.” This movie puts a spin on the beauty and the beast storyline. Instead of the beast turning into the beauty, the beauty turns into the beast. With the comedic voices of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, and John Lithgow, adults and kids alike will laugh at this movie.

The story is about an ogre named Shrek who is content with his life living alone, yet a wrench is thrown into his plans when he goes on a mission to rescue Princess Fiona. He begins to fall in love with her and sees her for more than her beauty.

The big green ogre is hard not to love and will win the hearts of every viewer whether they are eight or 68.

Love Actually

Finally, a more recent movie that has got all of America wooing is “Love Actually.” This movie tells the tale of not only romantic love but also other kinds of love that people feel on Valentine’s Day like friend-to-friend love, father-and-son love and newlywed’s love among others.

“Love Actually” stars Hugh Grant, Laura Linney, Keira Knightly and Emma Thompson, among other newcomers. It is set in London and chronicles the tale of heartbreak, marriage, young love, passion and crushes.

“Love Actually” provides a well-thought-out background to cute and romantic gestures. Writing love notes on poster board, following a loved one to the airport, spreading a jacket over a puddle for a lady and an awkward first kiss between two rookies will make girls swoon and the guys wish they were cast for a part in the movie.
