After winning the first two races of the season, there was only one thing that could stop senior Bonita Paul.

A sinus infection.

The infection kept Paul from competing at the Arkansas Little-Rock Invitational two weeks ago. Cara Nichols also sat out the meet because of flu-like symptoms.

After resting during fall break, the team will get back on track tomorrow at the Auburn Invitational, where Paul and Nichols are both expected to return.

“I think a weekend of rest will help us get over our sicknesses,” senior Susana Beraun said. “I think we’re ready for Friday. Hopefully we’ll do really well.”

The five-kilometer race will allow the team to face teams from across the south including Western’s District III foes Wake Forest and William and Mary.

“They are two of the traditional powers in District III,” coach Curtiss Long said.

Senior Enda Grandfield, the team’s lead runner, is questionable for this eight-kilometer race after being struck by a minivan while riding his bicycle on Monday.

“My shoulder is a little sore, and my chest is feeling sore,” said Grandfield, who expects to run tomorrow. “But I feel a lot better.”

Western might also have to go without the services of senior Augustine Amonge, who has a low red blood cell count.
