Among the many activities and awards taking place during graduation on May 10 will be words from Tom Layzell, who was recently elected President of the Council on Postsecondary Education.
Originally from Illinois, Layzell also worked as Commissioner of Higher Education in Mississippi. He now lives in Lexington.
Layzell was asked by President Gary Ransdell to attend graduation. He has spoken at other events like this before, but never at Western.
“I wanted to introduce him to the university community and thought that this was an appropriate venue in which to do it.” Ransdell said.
Although Layzell is not yet sure as to what he will say to the graduates, he does say that it will include congratulations to the graduates and their families.
“I’m delighted to do this, I enjoy going to graduations.” Layzell said.
The ceremony will take place May 10 beginning at 9 a.m. at L.T. Smith Stadium, There is 1275 students expected to participate. Overall, 1,802 degrees will be given- 150 associate, 1,306 bachelor and 346 graduate
“I have not visited Western before, I am excited to come.” Layzell said.
