Nappy Roots’ member arrested
April 8, 2003
A member of Grammy-nominated rap group Nappy Roots was arrested last week for assault, according to a Bowling Green Police Department report.
Vito Jermaine Tisdale, “Big V,” and his common law wife, Erica Denise Cherry, were both arrested April 1 for assault in the fourth degree after the two engaged in a “physical altercation,” according to the report.
Cherry, 25, and Tisdale, 27, have been together for 11 years, Cherry said.
“This is none of anyone’s business,” she said yesterday of the charges. “It is our personal business. And (Tisdale) would say the same thing.”
Police were called to the couples’ Pascoe Boulevard apartment at 11:14 p.m.
According to the report, Tisdale said Cherry became upset during an argument and started slapping him. She also pushed him down the stairs of their apartment and threw picture frames at him.
Cherry said Tisdale began assaulting her first and she only struck him in self defense and in an attempt to get away, according to the report.
Tisdale had a minor cut on his right hand and swelling to his left foot; Cherry had a cut on the inside of her lip and scratches on her neck.
“It was a personal problem,” Cherry said. “It was something every husband and wife go through. We are still together.”
She said all of the media attention the arrest has received is unwanted and unneeded.
“To me that’s an invasion of privacy and that’s not right,” Cherry said.
Both were released the same day from Warren County Regional Jail on a $1,000 unsecured bond.
Tisdale and Nappy Roots manager Kevin Mitchell could not be reached for comment.
