Gord Veldman moved closer to qualifying for his second straight appearance in the NCAA swimming tournament following last weekend’s meet.

At the Indiana University Invitational, the senior from Kingston, Ontario, put up a time of 47.98 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke, slightly improving his best time from the National Independent Championships (48.12).

By swimming in the meet, Veldman was able to move ahead of three other swimmers competing for a spot in the tournament.

If Veldman qualifies, he will become the only Hilltopper to qualify since Dan Powell, head coach Bill Powell’s son, qualified in 1986 and 1988.

The NCAA will announce its final decision on Friday.

Also representing Western was junior Matt Nalbone. Nalbone set a career best in the 100-yard freestyle (46.00).
