Throughout February, in honor of Black History month, the African American Studies Program will be sponsoring a four part lecture series titled “The Truth About Black Love.”

The first lecture on Feb. 6, “You, Me, She and He,” will involve a student discussion panel with talent search coordinator and African American Projects member Martha Sales. They will answer questions and share information about committed African American relationships and the problem areas that show up in relationships.

“There are many red flags that seem to pop up in relationships, and we want to try and solve that,” Sales said.

The second lecture on Feb. 13, “For The Love of Money,” will feature accounting and finance assistant professor Harold Little, speaking on black economics, the failure of African Americans to maintain money and wise money investment strategies.

The third lecture on Feb. 20, “How Do I Love Me?”, with speaker Debra Crisp, a counseling services staff psychologist, deals solely with suicide.

The final lecture on Feb. 27, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?”, with speaker Alice Gatewood, focuses on AIDS awareness.

All lectures will be at 3 p.m. in the Grise Hall Auditorium.

“These lectures are scheduled to find out more about African Americans, and they will hopefully give a different view of everyone in the four different areas of love from [love of] ourselves to [love of] money,” Sales said.

Sales said she hopes these lectures will help everyone who attends to find a way to establish better patterns for their lives.

Elizabethtown freshman Dorthea Brumsey expressed excitement in attending this four part lecture series.

“I noticed the lectures posted in Potter Hall, and they seem to be very interesting issues in the African American community,” she said. “They seem to me to be very relevant, and it made me ask myself, ‘Am I viewing myself as I should be?’ I think I will leave the lectures as a better person.”

Sales expects the best for each lecture.

“I wish everyone would come out and join us, the more the merrier,” she said.

Hendersonville, Tenn., sophomore John Campbell said he plans to attend at least one of these lectures.

“In a world of colors, there’s a lot to learn, and I plan on going so I can learn more about a different race,” he said.
