Elizabethtown freshman Steven DeWayne Mayton was indicted Wednesday by a Warren County grand jury for the Oct. 16 robbery of a student in Pearce-Ford Tower.

The grand jury handed down one count of first degree robbery and one count of first degree burglary to Mayton, who lived in PFT Room 1617.

The charges against Mayton stem from the robbery of Nick North, a sophomore from Zionsville, Ind.. North reported last month being robbed of $150 in cash by a masked man wielding a small handgun in his 11th-floor PFT dorm room.

North could not be reached for comment.

Campus police Sgt. Mike Dowell presented the case against Mayton to the grand jury. He said North’s identification of the PFT gunman was the strongest piece of evidence authorities had against Mayton.

Mayton has not yet been arrested, Dowell said.

Another law enforcement agency besides campus police could take Mayton into custody if he has fled Bowling Green. Dowell said he anticipates an arrest soon.

“We’d like to see him arrested tonight,” Dowell said.

Mayton could not be reached for comment.

Capt. Jerry Phelps said campus police believe Mayton has left Western.

“As far as we can tell, he’s nowhere around,” Phelps said.

Registrar Freida Eggleton said records from her office show Mayton is still enrolled in classes at Western, and PFT hall director Lana Riney said Mayton is still listed as a resident of the dorm.
