WKU alumnus taking donations for Eastern Kentucky flood relief
August 1, 2022
Former WKU basketball player is organizing a way for Bowling Green residents to donate to flood victims.
Justin Johnson will be taking a truck of supplies from Bowling Green to Eastern Kentucky to aid flood victims, according to his post on social media.
Catastrophic flooding across Eastern Kentucky left communities in desperate need of relief supplies. Breathitt, Clay, Knott, Letcher and Perry counties and other mountainous areas of Eastern Kentucky Appalachia were affected by severe destruction and resulted in hundreds of people displaced. Governor Andy Beshear confirmed today that the death toll is now 35.
These communities are now relying on government and state assistance, and Kentucky residents like Johnson are working to form relief donation efforts across the state.Â
The donation truck will be set up behind Crossland Community Church on Fairview, with the address 600 U.S. 31 W Bypass STE 18D.Â
It will take relief item donations Monday, Aug. 1 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 2 from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. and will leave for Hazard on Wednesday, Aug. 3.
Toiletries, sheet sets, any clothing items organized by size, baby products such as diapers and formula, flashlights and water are all vital items suggested by the list from his Facebook post. Other items include non-perishable goods with pop-top lids, Rubbermaid containers, cleaning supplies and batteries.
For those unable to make the drop-off times but still wishing to help, monetary donations for the Johnsons to purchase relief items can be taken on Venmo, @keeleyklae, CashApp, $keeley23, and on Facebook Pay, Keeley Rogers Johnson.
