WKU Tennis played their second double-header this past Sunday against Western Carolina and Western Illinois. The Lady Toppers moved to 4-3 for this spring season after defeating Western Illinois, but losing to Western Carolina.

For the third time this season, the Lady Toppers secured the doubles point while playing against the Catamounts. The No. 1 duo of Junior Sayda Hernandez and Junior Sunskrithi Damera won 6-1, their first win of the season.

The No. 2 pair of sophomore Sofia Blanco and sophomore Rachel Hermanova won their doubles match 6-3. Despite these wins, Western Caralina dominated in singles play. Blanco and sophomore Mariana Zegada are the only two players who were able to secure points during the singles matches. The final decision went in favor of the Catamounts, 4-3.

Once again the Lady Toppers were able to secure the doubles point. The No.2 duo of Blanco and Hermanova won 6-1, sophmore Samantha Martinez and Zegada won 6-2 and Hernandez and Damera won 7-5. WKU did not drop a single set during singles play against Western Illinois, resulting in a 7-0 sweep.

“I thought in the first match our intensity was good. I thought we played really good doubles today, first and second match. We wanted to get in position to win the match and we did that. We just had trouble finishing it,” Head Coach Greg Davis said. “One thing I talked about a couple weeks ago was our doubles getting better and it improved a great deal in these last few matches we have had.”

The Lady Toppers will travel to Nashville, Tennessee to play the Belmont Bruins on Sunday, Feb. 5.
