WKU Baseball sweeps FAU in weekend series

WKU Baseball (22-19, CUSA 7-11) swept the Florida Atlantic Owls (23-18, CUSA 7-11) April 22-23 at Nick Denes Field.

 

GAME 1

WKU used a late offensive explosion to defeat the Owls 6-4 in game one. 

FAU took an early lead following a Hilltopper error in the top of the first, 1-0. 

WKU capitalized on an FAU error in the bottom of the second, tying the game 1-1. 

FAU took control back in the top of the fifth bringing two across the plate making it 3-1. 

FAU widened their lead with another run in the top of the seventh, 4-1.

WKU answered in the bottom of the seventh scoring four, capped off with a double steal by senior Tristin Garcia and graduate Drew Reckart, 5-4 Hilltoppers. 

Freshman Lukas Farris added insurance in the bottom of the eighth with a solo bomb, 6-4 

Graduate CJ Weins closed game one out in the ninth as WKU prevailed 6-4. 

 

GAME 2

WKU clawed out of a five run deficit in game two, defeating the Owls 9-8 in fourteen innings. 

FAU put WKU in a hole early, scoring five runs in the top of the third making it 5-0. 

Senior Ricardo Leonett began the Hilltopper comeback with a solo homer in the bottom of the third, 5-1.

FAU added two more with an RBI single and a fielder’s choice in the top of the fifth making it 7-1. 

Sophomore Ty Batusich cut into the deficit with a three-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, 7-4.

Junior Aidan Gilroy hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, dwindling the Owl lead to two 7-5. 

FAU widened the lead back to three with a sac fly in the eighth, 8-5. 

WKU responded in the bottom of the eighth. WKU scored two runs on an RBI single and  dropped a third strike that made it    8-7.

Reckart came across to score on an error in the bottom of the ninth tying the ballgame up at eight. 

WKU walked it off in the bottom of the fourteenth following a sac bunt and an Owl error, 9-8. 

 

GAME 3

WKU completed the series sweep on Sunday, defeating the Owls 4-2.

Garcia gave WKU the lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single. 

The Hilltoppers added another run in the bottom of the fourth following an error, 2-0. 

Batusich and junior Andrew Delaney each collected RBI’s in the fifth inning making it 4-0 Hilltoppers. 

FAU brought two across in the top of the ninth, but it was too little too late as WKU won 4-2.
