WKU Softball claims series win against FIU

WKU Softball hosted the FIU Panthers for a three-game series April 28-30. The Hilltoppers picked up a series win, claiming two out of three games over the Panthers. 

The series brought WKU’s season record to 27-21 with a 12-8 record in conference play. 

 

Game 1

WKU dropped the opening game of the series Friday, to the Panthers 7-3 Friday.

Both offenses were silent to start the game as neither team scored through the first three and a half innings. 

FIU began the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with a big inning. The Panthers tallied five runs to take a 5-0 lead on two RBI singles, an RBI triple and a two-run single.

Fifth-year Faith Hegh responded for the Hilltoppers in the fifth with a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-2. 

WKU chipped away at the lead again the following inning with a solo homer, making it a 5-3 game. 

FIU closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth with runs on an RBI single and an RBI double to claim a 7-3 victory.

Despite the loss, Hegh recorded two hits and two RBIs at the plate. 

 

Game 2

The Hilltoppers evened the series on Saturday with a 4-1 victory over FIU. Senior Brylee Hage led the Hilltoppers offense with two hits and two RBIs in the contest.

Both offenses once again started slowly. Hegh opened the scoring in the fourth with an RBI single, giving WKU a 1-0 lead.

WKU added two more runs in the fifth on an RBI single and an RBI double to take a 3-0 lead. 

The teams traded runs in the sixth on an RBI single by the Hilltoppers and an RBI triple by the Panthers. Both teams failed to score in the seventh as WKU claimed a 4-1 victory.

 

Game 3

WKU claimed a series victory over FIU Sunday with a 7-4 win in the final game of the weekend. 

The Panthers exploded out of the gate with four runs in the first inning. FIU made it a 4-0 game on a two-run error and a two-RBI double. 

WKU responded with a two-RBI double and RBI single in the third to cut the deficit to 4-3. 

The Hilltoppers took the lead the following inning with an RBI single and a steal of home to make it 5-4. 

WKU added two more in the fifth on a sac fly RBI and an RBI double, making it a 7-4 game and giving the Hilltoppers a victory.

Fifth year Taylor Davis led WKU’s offense with three hits and two RBIs in the contest. 

The Hilltoppers will return to the field March 5-7 to host Louisiana Tech in a three-game series to wrap up the regular season.
