The Ukrainian Club hosted a movie night in the Honors College and International Center on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.
The club chose to watch “My Thoughts are Quiet,” a Ukrainian comedy-drama film directed by Antonio Lukich that was released in 2019.
Foreign exchange student Mariia Novoselia founded the club in the Spring 2023 and has continued sharing customs and language from her home country of Ukraine.
Calee Carroll, sophomore political science and legal studies student, has been with the club since the beginning and is now their treasurer. She was first introduced to the club through the curator, Novoselia, who is her roommate.
“I joined the club because I love learning about people’s cultures and think it is really important because of the situation in Ukraine right now and she, Novoselia, was the only representation on campus, and I think it is really important that she is telling people that Ukrainians are here,” Carroll said.
Carroll was introduced to Ukrainian culture through Novoselia and became interested in being exposed to more.
She was excited to be able to watch a Ukrainian film as she had never seen one before.
Also in attendance was Yanet Moges, junior entrepreneurship major, who has been with the club since the beginning as well.
“I’m excited to learn the language while also [being] able to read English at the same time,” Moges said.
Moges has continued her journey with the club because she enjoys being able to hang out with friends and have fun at the same time.
Evan Wheeler, sophomore architectural science major, originally joined the club through his girlfriend, Carroll, but decided to continue his journey after becoming good friends with Novoselia.
He was excited for the movie night as he is only familiar with a small part of the Ukrainian language.
“I’m excited to see the movie, it’s going to be a great learning experience,” Wheeler said.
