The buzz of the Scholastic Book Fair is a memorable moment for many that created lasting feelings of excitement for elementary school children.
With this in mind, Shelby Summers, senior elementary education major and president of the WKU Literacy Ambassadors, is partnering with Scholastic to host a book fair on campus this week.
All profits made from the book fair will go towards a program that Literacy Ambassadors holds each year in partnership with local elementary schools. The program provides children with a bag filled with 10 free books to keep. This year, the chosen school is Dishman-McGinnis Elementary School.
The program began after the tornados that struck Bowling Green in 2021 caused many children to lose all of their belongings. Literacy Ambassadors wanted these children, among others, to have access to books.
“Without access to books, you’re three years behind your peers in all subjects,” Summers said.
The book fair itself is meant to hold nostalgic value to college students.
“I thought it was very nostalgic and was one of my core memories when getting excited for the book fair,” Summers said.
Cloe Bates, junior english major, said the book fair brought back fun memories from childhood.
“I think that it’s really fun and it definitely brings back memories,” Bates said.
Bates also mentioned that having a book fair with finals week around the corner was helpful to morale.
The book fair will continue until Friday, Nov. 1, and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Gary Ransdell Hall Student Success Center.
